UCP agent demo. An agent completed the whole purchase.

A working agent that shops over UCP, Google's Universal Commerce Protocol: discovery, cart and checkout against an agent-ready store, end to end.

Universal Commerce Protocol · Google

What we set out to prove

Google developed the Universal Commerce Protocol with Shopify and other commerce leaders to give agents and merchants a shared way to transact. We implemented the protocol to test that promise in practice, building an end-to-end shopping agent that discovers merchant capabilities and carries a purchase from product search to a completed order.

What the agent does

The agent searches the merchant's catalog, evaluates products, manages the cart and moves through checkout using Universal Commerce Protocol capabilities. The merchant continues to own the transaction while the agent coordinates each step on the shopper's behalf.

Why we tested two flows

Real shopping sessions begin with different levels of user context. In one demonstration, the address and test payment method are already available to the agent. In the other, the agent brings the user into the flow to enter them. Both reach the same completed order without hiding the moment when human input is required.

What the implementation established

UCP can carry the state of a purchase across catalog, cart and checkout interactions while accommodating both stored and user-supplied information. The agent does not replace the merchant's commerce system; it becomes another way to operate it through declared, mutually supported capabilities.

How this helps our clients

The working flow gives us a practical reference when assessing a retailer's catalog, checkout, identity and payment readiness. We can show where an existing commerce stack already maps to UCP, where transformation is required and where the shopper must remain in control.
